Dr. Trevor Kilian at Kilian Chiropractic wants to be your downtown Vancouver chiropractor because he understands that extremity chiropractic care is an important component to your overall health.
Causes of Extremity Pain
A pinched nerve in one’s lower lumbar spine can be the source of shooting pains, odd sensations, and even at times cause a lack of muscle control in a foot or leg. When a herniated disk presses against a nerve in the cervical spine it can cause similar symptoms in the hand and arm.
A musculoskeletal imbalance that originates in the spine can also strain your body’s muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Such strains can lead to various problems such as:
- Plantar fasciitis making it difficult to stand for long periods
- Runner’s knee
- Iliotibial band syndrome resulting in hip pain
- Chronic backaches
- and more
Extremity pain can also originate in the extremity itself. An acute hamstring injury or a sprained ankle, for example, can cause bones in the joints to become misaligned to the point they can’t heal properly.
Symptoms of Extremity Issues
Whether it’s wrist pain, elbow pain, knee pain, or ankle pain the common symptoms to them all are:
- Weakness in the extremity joints
- Stiffness or immobility in the extremity joints
- Chronic and acute pain in the extremity joints
- Catching or locking of the extremity joints
- Numbness or tingling in the limbs
Our goal with chiropractic adjustments is to restore a proper alignment of the joint allowing it to function properly.
How We Treat Extremity Pain
The first step of treatment, whether you have ankle pain or wrist pain, is to see if the root problem may be in the spinal column. Often a herniated disk or some other spinal problem causes referred pain making a spinal adjustment the most logical first step in extremity chiropractic care.
Massage therapy is often prescribed to help restore a healthy range of motion. This also helps relieve soft tissue pain, inflammation, and swelling.
Extremity chiropractic care can also include physiotherapy techniques such as electrical muscle stimulation, hydrotherapy, and laser therapy.
Extremity adjustment can help the healing process in tennis and golfer’s elbow, runner’s knee and plantar fasciitis, and frozen shoulder. Extremity pain treatments can improve joint movement, flexibility, and even promote a reduction in the arthritic processes that occur in joints.
