Common School-Related Stresses and Injuries

Backpacks are often responsible for shoulder pain and back pain if carried inappropriately, loaded improperly, or simply too heavy. Roller backpacks can also lead to slips and falls if they tip or get stuck on doors and other objects.

Another school-related issue that can lead to neck pain, headaches, and back pain is the excessive amount of sitting. Many students slouch in their chairs and sit too close to computers, which strains tissues in the spine.

Tips for Managing Back-to-School Injuries

  • Load a bag properly. A child’s backpack should weigh no more than about 10-15% of his or her body weight. Place heavier items on the bottom of the bag closest to the spine, and use small compartments for smaller objects to help redistribute the weight and make it easier to load/unload.
  • Use both straps when using a backpack, and find a bag with wide padded straps.
  • Ensure the bag falls just below the waist.
  • Avoid roller backpacks (many schools prohibit them anyway due to tripping hazards).
  • To stay safer while sitting, adjust your position every 10 to 15 minutes. When using a computer or phone, avoid flexing the neck down and rounding the shoulders. Try to sit up straight and keep your digital devices at eye level.
  • Consult with a chiropractor in Vancouver for scoliosis screenings, sports physicals, and treatment of any aches and pains. Early treatment with natural services like adjustments and core stabilization exercises can drastically improve outcomes and avoid recurring problems!
